    Last Day at Las Vegas
I'm staying at Las Vegas one more night but today is practically the last day in Las Vegas. My flight tomorrow is 7:00 am. I need to try very hard to get up in the next morning. Almost all of the last day was spent on walking up and down the Strip. I haven't walked that much lately and my left foot hurts.

I burned some money by gambling. You can't really say you've been to Las Vegas unless you loose some of your money by gambling, right? I've never gambled in Japan and I hope that was the life's worth of gambling. Since I walked too much for last two days, I decided to become couch potato and stop abusing my feet around three. I have had enough Las Vegas experience and am ready to go home.

    Translation project
My current interest in open source world is whether we can form a community arround translation project. Most translation project are very small and I've yet to see active community dedicated to do translations. (Please let me know if you know one.)

It's hard to cooperate in translation project because many things are drudgery. Unlike software libraries, translations are not reusable. My conjecture is that if you can search and reuse translatins just like reusable software components, there's a chance of having a community around that.

I'm also interested in writing tools to free translators from some of the drudgery like synching translation when changes are made to the original documents. I think gettext tools can handle that kind of things for po files but I don't know if there's any tool to do that for XML files we use. It looks so simple but it's not very easy to automate it in a satisfactory manner.

It seems a bit odd for me to start writing these kind of tools after doing everything manually for four years. I've been skeptical about natural language processing because it doesn't always work well. But I changed my mind largely thanks to my summer intern experience and am willing to investigate some of my time to this field.

    Las Vegas
Today and tomorrow, I'm going to stay at Luxor hotel. This city is too spread out like almost any other cities in America. I'm not a big fun of this city but I'm going to do some sightseeing before I go back. I don't intend to come back to Las Vegas in the future so this is the last chance for me to have the taste of the city. (Yeah, I know. I didn't plan to come back to U.S. for a while when I left the country in early June but this is already the second visit in the same year.)

    Last day at ApacheCon
Today is the last day of the ApacheCon 2004. I already attended the two velocity sessions in the morning and am ready to write some code to make Japanese translation of HTTP Server Project web possible.

    Mono
Today's keynote speach was about Mono by Miguel de Icaza. I have had mild interest in Mono but the presentation really did boost my interest. I have lots of interest in programming language. My master's thesis was about Garbage Collection. I worked on Lisp VM (XEmacs) and Jikes RVM. I have to prioritize my interest because I have too many interest but I'd like to learn C# language and mono implementation when I get more time to spare.

    Fourth day at ApacheCon
There are too many things going on here so I can't write down everything. I volunteered for two session chair duty and the last one ended this morning. I got too nervous at both times and couldn't say all what I had prepared for introduction. I'm not gifted at public speach and English. I don't have any responsibilities here so everything left is for me to have fun and lean interesting things. There's been interesting talks and meeting people are fun. I'm set to enjoy the rest of ApachCon.

    Third day at ApacheCon
I can't believe it's already the third day of ApacheCon. Time literally flies. Hackathon has been great for me. I'm really glad that I decided to come here. From today, "normal" part of ApacheCon starts. I'm looking forward to this part of the conference, too. There are lots of interesting sessions I want to attend.

    Mystere
We went to see Mystere yesterday. It was very cool. I'm glad I went to see the show even though I was very sleepy because of the jet lag. I've heard that O is also very good, too. You must see Silque du Solleil show when you go to Las Vegas.

    To Las Vegas
I wanted to avoid immigration at Los Angeles by all means but because of domestic flight ticket, I had to change flights at LAX. As I very much feard, I ended up going through further investigation. My I-20 was only valid till last June but the last time I was in U.S. was September 28th. It looks like they thought I overstayed after I-20 was over. The reason I thought I might get further investigation was that I stayed 2 and half months with visa waiver this summer. I didn't expect them to be confused by the record and to think I overestayed. Anyways, LAX remains on top of my list of the airport not to use to enter U.S. although San Francisco is the only other airport on that list. SFO was much nicer. They asked right kind of questions. The officer even said a joke about IPO.

Including the waiting time, it took about one hour to go through the immigration and took another one hour to go through security at boarding. There was an insanely long line formed at terminal 1. So it seems that it was a good decision to allocate three and half hours before next flight. It seems I could've taken one flight earlier, though.

This is the third time I went through U.S. immigration and I don't really like that. Frankly, it's the worst among countries I visited. But it has been all good after that. I hope it will be the same again this time, too.

S5 Simple Standards-Based Slide Show System
S5 is an XHTML and CSS and JavaScript based slide show system. I have been using Prosper for my presentations but this one looks like worth considering.
